What is WordPress optimization?  This is Part 1 of a series of blog posts covering WordPress optimization. A simple definition would be any activity to improve your site’s efficiency. I could list other buzzwords here like faster, speed, tweaking, performance, and discoverability to get your attention, but they all lead to icreasing efficency.

#1. Hosting

“If you  open a Bloomingdales in the ghetto you will get robbed.”

Is a slogan I heard about 15 years ago and it relates to the hosting you are using.  If you are on a cheap shared hosting account that does not have the proper resources to handle your site’s requirements, then you are getting robbed.  The problem here is you are robbing yourself! If you do not believe that, then you will find out the hard way and I will be the first to say “I told you so”.

These cheap shared hosting plans are sufficent for a small blog to keep track of your family event and vacations, but if you plan on making money off the site, you will not on these cheap plans. 

My personal recommedation is to go with a higher end shared hosting plan or a “Managed WordPress Hosting Plan”.  A majority of the host offer both.  If you have not experience with WordPress, I suggest the Managed WordPress plans which comes set up for a WordPress site along with techinical maintenance and assistance. Better plans also assit you with the optimization or offer a service to do the optimization.

Why is this imortant?  It saves you time and money.  Let’s say you have a WordPress site that all of the sudden starts consuming excessive resources.  One option you may try is to optimize the site just to find out later you need to upgrade your hosting plan dues to a constant increase in traffic. With a Managed WordPress plan from a good host, when they tell you you need to upgrade you usually do.  They will take the time to see if optimizations can be tweaked or you really need to upgrade.   

You save money because you did not spend up to $100 for an annual subscription for a simple page cache plugin and possibly more to have somemone set it up, to find out you had to upgarde anyhow.  You could of used that money to upgrade your hosting plan instead.
